Bottom Line

Choose it for richly detailed Star Wars exploration, Nix-assisted play, and a lived-in underworld—especially on sale or in the strong Switch 2 package. Skip it if clunky vehicles, repetitive missions, or uneven stealth will outweigh the atmosphere.

Best for

Star Wars fans who want to wander detailed planets, absorb the underworld atmosphere, follow organic side leads, and enjoy a mix of stealth, blaster combat, Sabacc, and exploration.

Not for

Players who need deep systemic stealth, precise vehicles and platforming, major story consequences from choices, or consistently polished open-world mechanics may find the rough edges too distracting.

Verdict

Star Wars Outlaws is at its best when it lets you exist in the galaxy: wandering dense settlements, chasing overheard leads, working faction jobs, and soaking up exceptional sound and environmental detail. Kay, Nix, and ND-5 give the smaller-scale criminal story personality, while the Experts progression and reputation systems add useful texture. The tradeoff is consistency. Stealth detection, vehicle handling, platforming, combat depth, and technical polish draw repeated criticism, especially in launch-era coverage, and faction choices often matter less to the story than promised. Later patches and the Switch 2 port improve stability, flexibility, checkpointing, and portable play substantially. It remains a familiar open-world game, but one whose Star Wars atmosphere is strong enough to elevate many ordinary systems.

Pros

  • 4.5
    11 reviews moderate consensus
faithfulness to franchise: 4.5, 11 reviews, moderate consensus
The strongest consensus is authenticity: sights, sounds, locations, props, and underworld tone repeatedly make the galaxy feel unmistakably Star Wars.
  • 4.6
    9 reviews strong consensus
accessibility options: 4.6, 9 reviews, strong consensus
Accessibility is a standout, with broad menus, presets, and customization that make the game easier to tailor to different needs.
  • 4.2
    19 reviews strong consensus
immersion: 4.2, 19 reviews, strong consensus
Immersion is a signature strength, built by detailed locations, seamless travel, ambient activity, sound, and small interactions; bugs can puncture the illusion.
  • 4.7
    6 reviews moderate consensus
voice acting: 4.7, 6 reviews, moderate consensus
Voice acting is a major strength, with the cast repeatedly praised and Humberly González receiving especially strong notices as Kay.
  • 4.8
    5 reviews strong consensus
environmental detail: 4.8, 5 reviews, strong consensus
Locations are packed with tiny Star Wars details, dense settlements, and carefully recreated spaces that reward slowing down and looking around.
  • 4.4
    7 reviews moderate consensus
    world-building: 4.4, 7 reviews, moderate consensus
The criminal underworld, everyday cultures, and lived-in settlements make the galaxy feel broader than the usual Jedi-centered Star Wars stories.

Cons

  • 1.7
    7 reviews moderate consensus
bug frequency: 1.7, 7 reviews, moderate consensus
Launch-era coverage reports intrusive glitches and rough technical edges, while later patched versions are noticeably cleaner.
  • 1.5
    4 reviews strong consensus
monetization fairness: 1.5, 4 reviews, strong consensus
Full-price and premium-edition pricing draw sharp criticism, especially the $70 base game, $130 packages, and paid early access.
  • 2.0
    4 reviews moderate consensus
character development: 2.0, 4 reviews, moderate consensus
Kay’s arc splits opinion: some see convincing growth and earned relationships, while others find her development thin or nearly static.
  • 2.2
    5 reviews low consensus
checkpoint system: 2.2, 5 reviews, low consensus
Checkpointing was a major launch frustration, with erratic saves and lost progress; a later current-state take calls it frequent, fair, and reliable.
  • 2.5
    11 reviews low consensus
AI behavior: 2.5, 11 reviews, low consensus
Enemy AI is a recurring weak point: guards can be oblivious, predictable, or inconsistent, though a few later impressions find them just smart enough to keep stealth engaging.
  • 2.3
    6 reviews moderate consensus
grind level: 2.3, 6 reviews, moderate consensus
The trimmed Ubisoft structure reduces checklist fatigue for many, though fetch work, busywork, and repeated contracts still surface.

FAQ

Is Star Wars Outlaws worth full price?

Value is mixed. Several reviewers recommend buying on sale, while the Switch 2 Gold package earns much stronger praise because it bundles the major story DLC.

Is the stealth still frustrating?

Launch-era stealth drew heavy criticism for inconsistent detection and instant-fail rules. Later coverage says patches removed many forced failures and made infiltration more flexible, though stealth remains divisive.

How good is the open-world exploration?

Exploration is one of the clearest strengths. Dense settlements, overheard leads, secrets, side jobs, and faithful locations make simply wandering the planets a highlight.

Is space combat a major strength?

Opinions are mixed to negative. Some find dogfighting smooth and fun, but many describe ship handling, orbital exploration, and space combat as limited, stiff, or underbaked.

Does it feel faithful to Star Wars?

Yes. The strongest agreement centers on the sights, sounds, locations, props, music, and everyday underworld atmosphere feeling authentically Star Wars.

How is the Nintendo Switch 2 version?

It is very well regarded overall, especially in handheld mode. Reviewers praise its steady 30fps target, cross-save support, motion controls, bundled DLC, and impressive preservation of the game’s visual identity, with some docked blur and pop-in.

Is Kay Vess a strong protagonist?

She is divisive. Many reviewers find her warm, engaging, and refreshing, while others think her arc is underdeveloped or too close to a familiar smuggler archetype.
