Compare iRobot Roomba J5+ Combo Vacuum & Mop vs iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo Essential, Y0140

Ease of use is strong once configured, with reviewers praising the app, simple guidance, and convenient everyday control.

Review evidence supports this scored attribute.

Obstacle avoidance is one of the strongest attributes, with repeated praise for hazard detection, cords, objects, and pet waste avoidance.

Obstacle avoidance is weak, with reviewers describing bumping, wedging, barriers, and a need to supervise or clear obstacles.

Mapping and route efficiency were usually praised for accurate maps, efficient rows, and useful room-level navigation.

Mapping and path efficiency are the clearest weaknesses; reviewers repeatedly mention no saved maps, poor navigation, missing rooms, and basic clean-history outlines.

Crevice and groove pickup evidence is negative because one review said the design limited corners and crevices.

Crevice and groove-style hard-floor pickup is supported by a broad hard-floor debris result, with TechRadar saying most debris came up on the first pass.

Dust containment was viewed positively when the vacuum emptied into a sealed bag.

Filtration gets a negative owner assessment because the small paper filter is treated as non-washable and likely to need replacement.

Pet-related evidence is very positive, with praise for pet-hair pickup and obstacle avoidance around pet waste.

Pet suitability is mixed to weak: hair pickup can be decent, but reviewers warn the small bin and weak mapping make it poor for pet-heavy homes.

Tool changes are a weak spot because several reviewers disliked swapping bins for mopping, though one setup review found the pad easy to attach.

Tool and mode changes are straightforward when discussed, especially the mop plate clipping on easily.

The bin and bag system was usually praised for convenience and distance from chores, especially in vacuum-only use.

The bin is easy enough to remove, but reviewers criticize its small capacity and the manual emptying burden, especially around pets or larger homes.

Stuck resistance is mostly strong, though one reviewer reported confusion around the dock and kitchen table.

Stuck resistance is inconsistent, with some successful escapes and rare sticking in simple rooms, but multiple reviewers report wedging, beaching, or odd stoppages.

Streaking evidence is limited but negative from a setup test that saw an unwet strip while mopping.

Residue and smearing are mixed: reviewers report ketchup smearing and small remaining seeds, even though most messes were eventually cleared.

Hair pickup on carpets is strong overall, with minimal tangles and efficient pickup, despite some remaining clumps in one test.

Carpet pet hair pickup is supported indirectly by the same pet-hair test, but the result is only average rather than excellent.

Carpet pickup evidence is strong, with reviewers reporting above-average deep cleaning and strong rug or carpet performance.

Only one review gives pile-specific evidence, noting plush carpet caused the mop section to catch, making medium/plush carpet handling merely average.

Fine dust pickup on hard floors is split, with one review praising tiny crumb pickup and another seeing flour struggles.

Fine dust pickup on hard floors is a bright spot, with strong sand pickup, fine-dust maintenance, and solid first-pass hard-floor cleaning.

Hair pickup on hard floors is generally strong, though Tom's Guide reported pet-hair struggles on hardwood.

Hard-floor pet hair pickup is supported indirectly by a pet hair test, where the robot collected about 75% of laid-out hair.

Handling evidence is mixed, ranging from clunky navigation around furniture to strong extraction from tight spots.

Handling is inconsistent, with good access to tight spaces offset by clumsy bumping, erratic behavior, and incomplete coverage.

The liquid system is a major weakness, with leakage, seepage, and no water-flow control repeatedly criticized.

The liquid system is limited by water-only mopping and no detergent, though one owner liked that it uses an electric pump instead of passive dripping.

Small-space suitability is mixed because the robot is low enough for furniture but not necessarily ideal in tight furnished spaces.

Small-space suitability is one of the product's best-supported strengths, with multiple reviewers recommending it for apartments, small homes, or closed-off rooms.

Mess control is mixed: vacuum-mode bag emptying is clean, but the mop bin prevents auto-emptying and can spill debris.

Emptying is simple in small spaces but not hands-off; reviewers praise easy bin removal while warning that manual emptying becomes irritating with pets, dust, or combo messes.

Tangle resistance is usually excellent with the dual rollers, though one reviewer still had longer human hair wrapping around the brushes.

Hair-wrap resistance is generally positive, with reviewers saying pet hair did not tangle or jam the brushroll badly.

Innovation compared with competitors was criticized by one reviewer who felt iRobot had fallen behind newer automated floor bots.

Innovation is rated poorly by an owner who expected new features and instead called the model a step back from older alternatives.

Packaging was praised for making parts easy to identify.

Packaging receives one positive owner note for using cloth bags and less plastic.

Surface safety with the mop attachment is a concern because leaking water led reviewers to warn against setting it on wood.

Surface safety is a concern for messy mop jobs because ketchup reached the wheels and could be tracked around the house.

Overall opinion is mixed: several reviewers recommend it as a smart vacuum, while others were disappointed by mopping and value limits.

Overall opinion is mixed across reviews, ranging from Editors' Choice praise to strong owner rejection based on price, mapping, and mopping limitations.

Area rug handling is weak in mop mode because reviewers had to rely on no-mop zones and warned rugs could get damp.

Rug handling is a major weakness because reviewers repeatedly say rugs or carpet must be removed, blocked off, or they may be mopped accidentally.

Dried-on stain removal was mixed to weak, with coffee sometimes handled well but grape juice and dried coffee disappointing.

Review evidence supports this scored attribute.

Accessories drew modest praise for practical touches such as spare-bag storage and an easy-to-attach mop pad.

The onboard accessories are praised when mentioned, especially the integrated brush/slicer tool that makes cleanup feel thoughtfully designed.

Clogging prevention received limited but positive evidence from a visible dock channel for checking clogs.

Debris and hair clog prevention is mostly positive, with reviewers noting stuck debris tools and husky hair not jamming the machine badly.

Large debris handling is mostly strong across tests, although one rice test was only about half successful.

Large debris handling is good overall, with PCMag reporting competitive rice pickup on carpet and excellent hard-floor results.

Runtime is adequate to good, especially because reviewers noted large-area cleaning and recharge/resume support.

Runtime is a strength, with reviewers reporting around two hours and one measured 127-minute result.

Under-furniture pickup is positive because the robot height was considered suitable for sofas and cabinets.

Under-furniture pickup is praised because the low body gets under furniture and tight areas.

Water tank feedback is mixed to negative: reviewers called it small, noted leaks or seepage, and wished for better level feedback.

The water tank works for basic mopping, but reviewers criticize the shared bin/tank space and the need to empty unused water after each job.

Heavy-duty suitability is weak, mainly because the mop was not considered adequate for substantial or ingrained dirt.

Heavy-duty suitability is poor because reviewers consistently say large homes, lots of debris, pets, or carpet-heavy environments overwhelm the simple design.

Maintenance is mixed: some found it low-maintenance, but mop-bin monitoring, no drip tray, water changes, and no mop cleaning hurt the score.

Maintenance is one of the most consistent drawbacks: reviewers mention manual dustbin emptying, water tank emptying, filter care, replacement parts, and obstacle prep.

Versatility is real but compromised: reviewers liked the vacuum-plus-mop concept but repeatedly limited it to occasional or light mopping.

Versatility is real because it vacuums and mops, but reviewers stress that it is a better vacuum than mop and lacks the control to exploit both modes easily.

Mop lifting is poor because the j5+ does not lift or retract the mop and depends on no-mop zones.

The mop system does not lift or avoid carpet automatically, so reviewers warn that users must remove pads, block carpets, or risk wet rugs.

Hard-floor large debris intake is mostly strong, especially for cereal and extra-large debris, but not flawless in every test.

Large debris pickup is generally strong, with reviewers citing high rice pickup, effective large-debris tests, and good dirt pickup.

Support and reliability evidence is negative because one reviewer had a long customer-service wait while troubleshooting mop setup.

Support and reliability has limited evidence, but Reviewed positively notes the clear warranty policy.

Auto-empty reliability is good in vacuum mode but compromised by mop-bin incompatibility and occasional docking trouble.

Review evidence supports this scored attribute.

Basic setup is often described as easy, but mopping-bin setup created confusion and troubleshooting for some reviewers.

Setup ranges from very easy in professional reviews to somewhat tricky in one owner review, with the strongest praise for fast app setup and clear instructions.

Value-for-money is mixed: it can be strong on discount, but several reviewers judged full pricing poor for the compromises.

Value-for-money is mixed: professional reviewers praise the discount-friendly budget value, while owner reviewers say it is not worth the asking price.

Price sentiment is sharply conditional: discounts made it appealing, while regular pricing felt hard to justify to several reviewers.

Price and value split reviewers sharply; pro reviews like the affordable feature set, while owner reviews say the price is too high for the limited mapping.

Smart features are broadly strong, with useful routines, voice controls, mapping, and automation, offset by some mop-bin app issues.

App and automation support are useful for scheduling, voice control, remote starts, and basic automation, but reviewers repeatedly criticize the limited controls, no saved maps, and missing no-go zones.

The app and UI are mostly praised as simple and intuitive, but mop accessory recognition and scheduling caused serious frustration in two reviews.

Controls and UI are easy to understand but shallow, with several reviewers describing the app as intuitive yet very basic or limited.

One review considered replacement bags reasonably priced.

Ownership costs are moderate but real because reviewers point to replacement filters, side brushes, mop pads, and spare pads available for purchase.

Comparative performance is strong overall, especially for vacuuming and obstacle avoidance versus similarly priced or low-midrange robots.

Comparative performance is split: reviewers praise hard-floor and dirt pickup against pricier robots, but several say other budget or higher-end robots offer better mapping and features.

Overall cleaning convenience is usually strong for vacuuming, scheduling, voice control, and auto-emptying, but one review penalized its many limitations.

Cleaning convenience is context-dependent: it can save time in small spaces, but missing maps, manual maintenance, and carpet barriers reduce convenience.

Mopping performance is the biggest mixed-to-negative theme: it is adequate for light wiping but weak for deeper cleaning and dried stains.

Mopping is mixed: some reviewers find it surprisingly good for light maintenance, while others say it only does okay work and lacks scrubbing or detergent.

General operating noise was described as acceptable or relatively quiet, while the louder auto-empty dock is scored separately.

Noise is generally acceptable, with owner reviews calling it quiet or not very loud compared with a regular vacuum.

Reviewers generally found vacuum pickup strong, with several praising real-world vacuuming even though one noted only standard-level suction.

Suction and dirt pickup are broadly good for the price, although reviewers note it still lacks the power for deeper carpet cleaning.

Design and finish were consistently praised, especially the sleek robot and better-looking clean base.

Design impressions are generally positive for build and finish, though one reviewer only frames the appeal as shiny/new rather than functionally advanced.

The floorhead design received positive evidence as a proven dual-brush system.

Floorhead design is mixed: reviewers like that the brushroll is easy to clean, but note the single bristle roller is less capable than iRobot's dual rubber rollers.

The low-profile design is positive, helping the robot reach under furniture.

The low-profile body is praised because it lets the robot get under low furniture and other tight spaces.

Battery and charging evidence is positive, with recharge/resume and adequate cleaning area receiving praise.

Battery life is viewed favorably, with reviewers reporting about two hours of operation and PCMag exceeding the stated runtime in testing.

Build quality is mixed: one reviewer calls it well made, while another notes visible battle damage, scuffs, and scratches from normal navigation.

Durability evidence is limited but negative where available, with one reviewer noting scuffs and scratches on the front after use.

Cord length receives a clear negative mention from TechRadar, which found the dock cable too short for the required placement.

Cord management is helped by a cable tidy on the dock, which one reviewer says can prevent the robot from becoming tangled in spare cable.

Fresh liquid pickup is strong in the one direct test, where the robot sucked up apple juice without trouble.

Kid-friendliness is a concern in one owner review, which worries that items left out by children could be hit and toppled.

Onboard tool storage is praised through the built-in brush/slicer tool clipped into the removable bin area.

Scratch resistance is mixed because the robot gets under furniture, but one reviewer found the top scratched from doing so.

The dock footprint/design was described as smaller and more elegant than some alternatives.

Weight is a downside in the one review that assessed it directly.

Corner cleaning was criticized because the single-brush design limited corners and crevices.

Dock noise is repeatedly criticized as loud, especially during auto-emptying.

Hard-floor edge cleaning was criticized because the single side brush struggled at edges.

Floor shine evidence is limited but positive from one review that found a wet-mopped floor shiny and clean.

Self-cleaning is a clear limitation because reviewers complained there is no mop cleaning or drying.

Privacy controls receive one clear positive mention because Reviewed praises iRobot's robust data privacy policy.

Software-update support was only lightly covered, with one setup review saying updates can take time and be tricky.
