Compare Ikea Varmblixt Smart Lamp vs Lepro STV1 TV Backlight

Many testers reported flawless or mostly solid operation after setup, though the broader Ikea Matter lineup has had some early reliability concerns.

The main screen-sync and lighting functions worked as advertised across extended viewing and varied content.

Basic remote setup can be simple, but unclear instructions and inconsistent Matter pairing create unnecessary friction for less experienced users.

Most users found calibration and connection straightforward, often taking only a few minutes. A 2.4 GHz router caused repeated pairing attempts for one tester, so setup may not be equally smooth everywhere.

At around $100, the lamp is widely considered a strong design value, especially because the smart version adds color, Matter, and a remote without a major price increase. The value drops if a separate Dirigera hub is required.

The STV1 is repeatedly described as a strong value because it delivers fast, vivid reactive lighting without premium sync-box pricing.

Physical placement and wall mounting are straightforward, with simple hardware and minimal assembly.

Peel-and-stick mounting is generally simple and can take about 15 minutes. Wall-mounted televisions are more awkward and may need to be removed before installation.

Motion triggers, scenes, and other automations generally worked well after setup, especially on stable Thread networks.

Once configured, TV-linked on/off behavior worked consistently enough that the system required no further attention.

The lamp can react to motion, locks, occupancy, switches, and other smart-home events, giving it more practical uses than a basic accent light.

The lights can turn on and off with the television, removing the need for routine manual control.

The lamp intentionally keeps effects simple and lacks the animated gradients or elaborate patterns offered by feature-heavy rivals.

Reactive effects feel natural, lively, and better integrated with the screen than ordinary decorative RGB strips.

The lamp does not synchronize with TV or media content, so buyers wanting reactive screen lighting will need another product.

Fast screen matching is the product’s clearest strength. Colors keep pace with busy action and extend the image with little visible lag.

The glow works in a small room or around the lamp itself, but it does not spread far enough to replace primary lighting.

The wide-angle camera captures the full screen and the strip spreads light broadly around the TV. Dark walls can mute the visible glow, while plain light walls give the strongest extension effect.

The visible cord is one of the design’s clearest compromises, especially when mounted on a wall. It also limits placement to areas near an outlet.

Extra corner-fixing stickers and the integrated controller help keep cable runs neat behind the television.

The long power lead helps with placement and makes wall mounting more practical.

Most cables are long enough for tidy routing, but the top sensor’s power lead may be about a foot too short for larger or higher-mounted TVs.

Basic remote use needs no hub, while advanced colors and automations require Dirigera or a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. That extra hardware can add cost or complexity.

The camera-based design avoids a separate HDMI sync box, cutting both complexity and the cost of extra hardware.

Controls usually respond quickly, although occasional lag appeared after hub integration in one test.

Reviewers repeatedly found little to no visible delay between screen changes and the backlight response.

A useful Bilresa remote is included, but the required AAA batteries usually are not.

The box is well organized and includes mounting clips, cable fixers, calibration pads, and the hardware needed for installation.

Custom scenes successfully reproduce favored colors and create useful ambient arrangements for specific rooms.

Generated and themed scenes can be creative, accurate, and fun for parties or sports. Their everyday value is less certain, as some users quickly returned to regular screen sync.

The included presets provide useful variety, while app or Matter control expands the palette further. It still offers fewer advanced effects than Hue, Govee, or Nanoleaf products.

Modes cover movies, gaming, music, parties, sports, and softer ambient use. The range is broad, although some specialty effects may be occasional rather than daily features.

Personalized scenes make it easy to recall favorite colors and match the lamp to room decor or specific routines.

Prompt-generated themes produce appealing combinations that users may not create themselves, with especially positive reactions for parties and team colors.

Twelve curated colors give the lamp useful personality straight from the box, with whites and pastel tones among the favorites.

Sports-oriented presets are quick to activate and can make team-color viewing more playful.

Color transitions are one of the highlights, moving gently through the preset palette instead of snapping between hues. Smart-app changes are not always as smooth.

Transitions are consistently fluid, with no harsh jumps and little sense that the lights are struggling to keep up.

Remote-controlled transitions glide smoothly between curated shades. App-based changes can become abrupt in some Apple Home setups.

Multiple colors remain distinct while still blending into the on-screen palette, avoiding the flat single-color wash common to simpler strips.

Apple Home, Thread, and remote commands are generally fast, with several testers describing changes as nearly instant.

Across games, movies, and rapid cuts, the lights react quickly enough to feel connected to the screen rather than delayed.

The Varmblixt excels at soft, decorative glow for bedrooms, dinners, hallways, and living spaces. It is consistently treated as atmosphere-first lighting.

The wall glow consistently makes viewing feel more immersive and cinematic. It also softens the harsh contrast of a bright television in a dark room.

Colors are balanced and tasteful rather than washed out or aggressively saturated.

The lighting follows scene intensity without pushing colors into an exaggerated, artificial look.

The lamp can produce lively, decor-friendly color without the flashy look associated with many RGB products.

Bright, colorful content looks especially lively, with vivid output that adds punch to games and animation.

Swappable bases and shades offer extra flexibility for owners of the original Varmblixt design.

The correctly sized kits fit tested 60-inch and 75-inch televisions well, with enough room for the stated size ranges.

Light is consistently described as soft, smooth, colorful, and pleasing for decorative use rather than raw brightness.

The backlight produces clean gradients and a cohesive wall glow that noticeably upgrades movie nights. Its strongest appeal is making the screen and surrounding room feel like one visual experience.

It can sit on a table, hang on a wall, and in one test even mount overhead, giving owners several display choices.

Included clips, adhesive supports, and a camera pad provide several ways to secure the strip and top-mounted sensor.

Colored light looks natural rather than harsh or oversaturated, especially for an accent lamp at this price.

Reds and blues look convincing, and RGBIC output can display several shades at once instead of turning the whole wall one color.

There is no music-sync feature, so buyers seeking reactive party effects will need a more specialized lamp.

Music mode follows rhythm and room or TV audio smoothly, adding movement without the jarring flashing some competing modes produce.

Pairing is the most inconsistent part of ownership. Some units connected immediately, while others required resets, repeated attempts, or re-pairing the remote after Matter setup.

Pairing was instant for one tester but required several attempts on another reviewer’s 2.4 GHz network.

Ikea Home Smart is simple and approachable once connected, with useful color, brightness, scene, and sensor controls. Its feature depth is more basic than premium rivals.

The app is easy to navigate and puts brightness, saturation, scenes, and behavior within quick reach. One tester preferred it to the apps from more established premium brands.

Phone controls adjust color and brightness quickly, making the app more dependable than the included remote in some setups.

App commands react quickly, which keeps adjustment from interrupting the viewing experience.

Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, and other supported platforms allow convenient hands-free control.

Voice commands can adjust brightness quickly, making hands-free control genuinely useful rather than merely decorative.

Peak output is the most repeated limitation. It is enough for accent lighting and some small bedrooms, but not for lighting a whole room.

Unlike many bias-lighting kits that can look underpowered, this strip reaches a genuinely useful peak brightness.

Brightness is adequate for ambiance and small spaces, but most reviewers found it too weak for full-room illumination.

The strip gets bright enough to add real impact, especially in dark rooms with light-colored walls. Output remains strong enough that one household sometimes dimmed it for comfort.

Selected colors generally match what users expect in the app, with natural-looking output rather than exaggerated hues.

Screen colors are generally mapped accurately and stay true during fast content. Pure white is the weak spot, with one tester noticing slight pink or green tinting.

This is where the Varmblixt is at its best, adding relaxed color and atmosphere without overwhelming the room.

The lighting expands the atmosphere around movies and games without feeling random or distracting.

At roughly a foot wide, the lamp has real visual presence but can consume a lot of bedside or tabletop space. Wall mounting solves much of that problem.

Combining the camera and controller reduces the number of pieces behind the TV and keeps the setup comparatively tidy.

The sculptural donut shape is the product’s defining strength and a frequent conversation starter. The matte white finish is stylish when lit, though some find it plain or drab when off.

The integrated hardware looks cleaner than many camera kits, but the top-mounted camera still lacks the seamless appearance of an HDMI-box solution.

Construction feels more premium than expected, with solid materials, sturdy cabling, and a well-finished body.

The component design feels thoughtful and well assembled, with protective and mounting details that go beyond a bare-bones strip kit.

Glass, metal, braided cabling, and other surfaces generally feel solid and premium for Ikea pricing.

A silicone-wrapped strip protects the RGBIC chips and gives the lighting hardware a more durable feel.

Soft output, warm evening tones, and deep dimming make the lamp comfortable for bedrooms and low-stimulation spaces.

Bias lighting reduced squinting and made a bright screen easier on the eyes in a dark room.

Adaptive Lighting smoothly shifts whites from cooler daytime tones to warmer evening light, and several reviewers considered it a standout feature.

Dirigera performance improved after updates, but earlier connectivity problems make the hub experience less consistently reassuring.

Matter is a major strength, opening the lamp to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and other compatible systems. It can also reduce dependence on Ikea’s Dirigera hub.

Pairing with a compatible motion sensor creates practical hallway, bedroom, and arrival lighting, and the tested setup worked well.

Unlike many decorative smart lamps, the internal light source can be accessed and replaced, improving long-term practicality.

Thread delivers quick, responsive control when the home has a compatible border router. Setup requirements are not always explained clearly on the packaging.

Alexa support makes the lamp easy to fold into an existing Amazon smart home, with Matter providing the bridge.

The lamp’s substantial weight gives it a reassuring presence on furniture, though its wide shape still needs thoughtful placement.

Light falls off quickly beyond the immediate area, so nearby objects are visible while the rest of a dark room can remain shadowy.

Adaptive evening settings move toward warmer yellow-white light, which can feel gentler and help users wind down.

The light source is rated for about 25,000 hours, supporting long-term everyday use.

Day-to-evening color shifts can provide cooler light for focus and warmer light for winding down.

Mixed white can reveal a little pink or green bleed when the LEDs are viewed closely, though the tint is less obvious on the wall.

The lamp spans cool whites, warm ambers, reds, pinks, lavender, turquoise, and yellow, giving it useful flexibility across the day.

The frosted ring looks even in a dark room, though nearby light sources can create a mottled appearance at lower brightness.

Stability ranges from flawless to inconsistent. Several testers saw solid day-to-day performance, while others experienced brief dropouts or difficult multi-platform pairing.

Cooler whites are clean and useful for daytime or small-room illumination, especially when Adaptive Lighting is enabled.

This is a permanently wired lamp, which disappointed reviewers who prefer cordless accent lighting.

Brightness can be lowered for gentle evening ambiance or raised for a more noticeable glow, with convenient remote and app control.

Holding the remote buttons produces gradual, comfortable brightness changes rather than abrupt jumps.

The frosted matte surface looks modern and diffuses color attractively. Opinions are less enthusiastic about its appearance when the lamp is switched off.

Updates can arrive through connected smart-home platforms, and recent Ikea releases appear to have improved earlier connectivity problems.

The gentle output is unlikely to dazzle, and dimming helps keep the lamp comfortable at night.

Google Home compatibility broadens platform choice and can unlock smart control without buying Ikea’s own hub.

Connected setups can adjust multiple compatible lamps together rather than treating each light separately.

Home Assistant access worked alongside other Matter ecosystems, making the lamp flexible for more advanced setups.

Freestanding use requires care because the wide lamp can be knocked over if placed in a busy area.

The integrated lighting is expected to last for years of normal use, with one estimate suggesting roughly two decades at three hours per day.

The frosted ring spreads light softly and evenly, giving the lamp its calm, indirect character.

The lamp remains fully usable with its physical button and included remote, so owners can skip apps and hubs for basic operation.

The Bilresa remote can manage multiple compatible lights and smart plugs, making it useful beyond the Varmblixt itself.

The lamp suits bedside tables, media units, hallways, entryways, walls, and decorative corners, though its cord and footprint influence the best location.

The included remote makes power, dimming, and color changes simple without a phone. It can also be reassigned for scenes or other smart-home accessories.

The remote is inexpensive and capable, but pairing behavior and occasional hesitation keep it from feeling fully polished.

A single Bilresa remote can manage multiple compatible devices in one room, which is unusually capable for such an inexpensive controller.

Occupancy and time-based routines can switch the lamp off when everyone leaves or bring it into daily smart-home patterns.

The remote and app can trigger personalized scenes, including bedroom, filming, and nighttime lighting setups.

Timed color and temperature changes make the lamp useful for evenings, arrivals, and daily lighting routines.

The frosted glass shade feels substantial and gives the lamp its premium, softly glowing appearance.

Gradual dimming and warm colors make the lamp well suited to bedtime routines.

The wake scene gradually brightens over about thirty minutes, offering a gentle start to the day.

The sleep scene slowly dims over about thirty minutes, creating a softer transition into bedtime.

Timers can make the lamp greet someone arriving home or follow a predictable evening schedule.

The broad freestanding body still needs a safe location because it can be knocked over.

The built-in wake scene gradually brightens the lamp and suits a bedroom routine.

Warm whites are soothing and effective in the evening, though fans of the original orange model sometimes prefer its richer cozy glow.

Apple Home is one of the lamp’s strongest integrations, offering fast control and Adaptive Lighting. A few testers needed repeated pairing attempts or extra steps with the remote.

Commands from the remote and connected controls usually register promptly, with near-instant response in the strongest setups.

An on-device power button is convenient, but it does not provide full color or brightness control.

Samsung SmartThings support adds another practical option for owners already invested in that ecosystem.

Ikea continues to issue updates, and connected platforms can deliver firmware directly to the lamp.

The 2.4 GHz-only connection can be finicky with some routers and may take repeated attempts before pairing succeeds.

The body feels substantial and well made, with durable glass or plastic construction depending on the tested unit description.

The sturdy barrel connector works, but USB-C would have been easier to replace and more convenient.

Tabletop, media-unit, bedside, and wall placement let the same sculptural lamp suit several decorating approaches.

The lamp dims low enough to preserve a faint trace of color, creating an especially subtle nighttime effect.

It can serve as a cozy bedside reading light in a small area, but low output limits it for serious task use.

Low lumen output makes it a poor substitute for a desk lamp, ceiling fixture, or other dedicated work light.

Whites move smoothly from cool daytime tones to warm ambient shades and work especially well with Adaptive Lighting.
