Compare RIG R5 Spear MAX HD vs Drop + Epos PC38X

Reviewers broadly liked the audio, with several calling it crisp, rich, detailed, or fantastic, while SoundGuys-style scoring and one warmer music impression kept it from universal audiophile praise.

Sound quality is the headline strength: reviewers repeatedly call the PC38X superb, detailed and unusually strong for a gaming headset. Even the more critical takes generally concede that its core audio is good.

Footstep and cue emphasis was praised in gaming use, with reviewers hearing boosted footsteps and easier-to-detect important sounds.

Two reviewers specifically found footsteps too subdued in competitive FPS with the stock tuning. They preferred brighter alternatives or EQ when footstep prominence was the priority.

Passive isolation was consistently useful, ranging from average lab results to reviewers calling it solid, superior, or excellent for blocking external noise.

Passive isolation is poor by design. Reviewers repeatedly note that the open-back cups let outside noise in, making the headset a better fit for quiet rooms than noisy shared spaces.

Frequency response was not neutral: reviewers noted unusual tuning, bass emphasis, and reduced upper mids/treble that could help games but hurt some vocals.

The tuning is widely viewed as balanced, natural or well judged for gaming, with enough warmth to stay enjoyable. Competitive-FPS preferences create some disagreement about how much upper-mid and treble emphasis is ideal.

Microphone noise handling was a recurring weakness because background noise could be picked up, though one reviewer credited the mic design with some analog reduction.

Background-noise handling is decent to very good in many tests, but plosives are a recurring weakness. Several reviewers recommend positioning carefully or adding a windscreen/pop filter for cleaner speech.

Soundstage and width were a strength for a closed wired headset, with higher immersiveness scores and reviewers noting a wider presentation.

The open-back design delivers a consistently praised wide, immersive soundstage that makes games and music feel spacious. A small minority found the stage less expansive or too left-right focused than the hype suggests.

Bass was generally viewed as controlled and satisfying: reviewers heard thump, rumble, and deeper bass without major muddiness, though it was not always described as huge or boomy.

Bass is surprisingly full for an open-back headset, with repeated praise for punch, texture and control rather than muddy boom. A few reviewers prefer less bass for competitive play, and sub-bass depth is not universally strong.

Positional accuracy was one of the strongest gaming attributes, with reviewers saying cues were easy to pinpoint and situational awareness was excellent.

Positional audio is usually excellent, with repeated praise for locating direction, distance and movement without virtual surround. A minority found the advantage game-dependent or the imaging hazier than competing headphones.

Wired latency was a strength, with reviewers explicitly praising zero latency and no audio lag.

The wired analog connections provide a low-latency gaming experience, with no meaningful audio-video sync concern reported.

Sound leakage was a repeated concern, with reviewers noting outward leakage despite thick cushions.

Sound leakage is an unavoidable open-back tradeoff: nearby people can hear your audio, especially at higher levels. One owner found leakage modest at normal volume, but shared-room use remains less private.

The detachable cable system was praised for its implementation and magnetic convenience in one detailed review.

The cable is detachable, but the deeply recessed proprietary-style 2.5 mm connection limits easy third-party replacement. Multiple reviewers call that restriction inconvenient.

Portability was supported by the fold/rotate design, with one reviewer noting it could go in a backpack.

Portability is weak. The cups do not fold flat, the pouch offers little protection, and the open-back design plus fixed boom mic make mobile use less convenient.

The detachable microphone system was usually praised for left/right switching and removal, though a few reviewers found it proprietary or more complicated than standard detachment.

The flip-to-mute boom is convenient, but it is permanently attached and fairly large. Reviewers who want a cleaner everyday headphone or modular setup repeatedly wish the mic could be removed.

The swivel range was useful in one review because the cups could rotate comfortably for neck resting.

Ear-cup rotation is limited: the cups may tilt or move slightly, but they do not swivel fully or lay flat. Reviewers who value full swivel see this as a drawback.

Volume output was mixed: one reviewer found it very loud and easy to drive, while another noted reduced output on PlayStation through the DAC.

The PC38X is widely praised as easy to drive from phones, PCs and console controllers without a dedicated amp. One reviewer still wanted a little more headroom from a low-power controller, but output is generally sufficient.

Replaceable earpads were praised for magnetic simplicity, though one reviewer wanted more pad options such as cooling gel.

Swappable earpads are a well-liked feature, letting owners choose between the included cloth/mesh and velour options. Reviewers who comment on it appreciate both the flexibility and the easy changeover.

Treble evidence was mixed: one lab review found a dip that hurt intelligibility, while others liked the smoother, less harsh high end for gaming.

Treble is generally crisp and detailed without becoming piercing, helping gunfire and positional cues stand out. Pad choice and taste matter: some heard a slightly dull top end, while others found it a bit bright or harsh.

Connectivity versatility was a strength because reviewers valued the port flexibility and easy movement among PC, console, mobile, and wired setups.

Dual analog cables make it easy to move between desktop and portable/controller sources without adapters. Reviewers who discuss the connection options see them as a practical strength.

Microphone quality was mixed: some found it decent, serviceable, or better than expected, while others called it average or not warm.

The boom microphone is broadly above average for a gaming headset, with clear speech and convenient flip-to-mute behavior. Criticism focuses on its bulky fixed design, plosives and the gap versus a dedicated microphone.

Headband adjustment and padding were viewed positively, with damped adjustment, plush padding, and good tension called out.

Headband adjustment has a broad range and accommodates a wide span of head sizes. The click-step mechanisms are generally viewed as secure and useful.

The integrated mic reproduced voices accurately in one review, though that same review noted background noise issues under another attribute.

The integrated boom mic is unusually capable for an all-in-one gaming headset. Reviewers like having clear built-in communication without needing a separate desk or boom microphone.

Clarity at higher output was strong in test-based evidence, with reviewers expecting little to no audible distortion.

One reviewer found the PC38X keeps its audio quality consistent as volume changes, with no obvious degradation at higher or lower listening levels.

Packaging made a strong first impression in unboxings, especially the black-and-gold presentation.

Packaging is minimalist and functional rather than premium. Reviewers generally accept the plain presentation because the headset and accessories are protected and the budget appears focused on the product itself.

Stability was strong in one detailed fit review, with secure clamp preventing movement.

One detailed fit assessment notes that the stronger clamp helps keep the headset stable on the head, even though that pressure can affect comfort.

Included accessories were praised as generous and considerate, especially the cables, DAC, plates, and adapters.

The accessory bundle is repeatedly praised: two useful cables, two pad sets and a simple pouch cover the main use cases without much filler.

Cable impressions were mixed: reviewers liked the no-degradation side-swapping concept and volume slider, but criticized the proprietary soldered connection.

The included braided cables are often praised as sturdy and practical, especially because two lengths/terminations cover different setups. Complaints center on stiffness, tangling and the occasional transmission of rubbing noise.

Layered audio was praised in one review, which described a rich soundscape with separated layers when using the DAC.

Separation is a strong point in dense mixes, with reviewers praising distinct channels, instruments and game cues. One music-focused take found separation merely average, but the overall pattern is clearly positive.

Midrange clarity was favorable in gaming contexts, with boosted mids helping dialogue and mid-to-high cues sound clear.

Mids are usually described as clear, natural and full, especially for voices and in-game detail. A minority found them either too recessed or a little too prominent, so the midrange tuning is not unanimous.

Ear padding was widely praised as deep, plush, soft, breathable, and comfortable, with one reviewer noting early fabric wear.

The ear pads are generally soft, breathable and deep enough to keep ears off the drivers, with cloth and velour options to suit preference. A few reviewers find the pads smaller or hotter than ideal.

Multi-platform support was strong where tested or assessed, especially for moving among PC, console, and mobile use.

Cross-platform use is a consistent strength: reviewers successfully use the PC38X across PC and multiple consoles, with the included cable options making controller connections straightforward.

EQ customization was mixed: one review criticized limited EQ options, while another noted Dolby Access can add an EQ profile.

There is no companion software for EQ, and reviewers who want to tune the sound see that as a clear limitation. External EQ or sound-card adjustments are possible, but the headset itself offers no software customization.

Controls were divisive: flip-to-mute and sliders were convenient for some, but missing cup controls and a poor volume ramp frustrated others.

The simple right-earcup volume wheel is usually praised for being easy to find and adjust quickly. Several reviewers dislike its light resistance or the fact that turning it fully down does not completely mute.

Voice quality ranged from accurate and better than average to tinny in some telecom use, so call performance was helpful but not uniformly strong.

Voice quality is one of the PC38X's better traits: calls and chat are typically clear, intelligible and natural for a headset mic. Some reviewers still hear thinness, inconsistent level behavior or a lack of bass compared with dedicated mics.

Setup simplicity was excellent because reviewers emphasized plug-and-play use and no required software.

Setup is mostly simple plug-and-play analog audio with no required drivers or companion software. One later owner reported more Windows and game-level troubleshooting than expected, so ease can depend on the source hardware.

Build quality was a major strength, with reviewers repeatedly calling it solid, premium, well built, or exceptionally well built despite plastic parts.

Build quality is the clearest split in the coverage. Some reviewers find the plastic chassis durable and well assembled, while others call it cheap-feeling, flimsy or chintzy for the price.

Clamp was generally secure without becoming painful, though one reviewer still noticed the medium pressure.

Clamp is the most divisive comfort trait. Some reviewers call it perfectly judged, but many find it tight or pinchy out of the box and recommend letting the headset loosen with use.

Weight comfort was mostly positive because reviewers found the headset light enough or well balanced, though some noted it was fairly heavy.

Low weight is unanimously praised where discussed. Reviewers repeatedly say the light plastic frame reduces fatigue over long gaming sessions.

Design impressions were consistently positive, with reviewers liking the professional black finish, gold accents, and studio-monitor style.

The restrained Sennheiser-style shape is widely liked, especially the later all-black look, but the original yellow accents are polarizing. Several reviewers appreciate that it looks less aggressively 'gamer' than many alternatives.

Long-session comfort was one of the strongest areas, with multiple reviewers reporting all-day, workday, or eight-hour wear without major discomfort.

Long-session comfort is a major strength: most reviewers can wear the PC38X for hours with little fatigue, helped by low weight and breathable pads. The main exception is firm initial clamp, which often eases after break-in.

Value was mixed: reviewers liked the audio and features, but the $150 wired price drew repeated hesitation.

Value depends heavily on sale price and priorities. Many reviewers consider the sound and comfort worth the premium, while others question paying close to $200 for a wired, plastic headset when cheaper or more feature-rich alternatives exist.

Earpad replacement was consistently easy thanks to the magnetic design, with reviewers highlighting simple removal and replacement.

When reviewers discuss the swap process directly, they find the pads easy to pop off and snap back into place. Changing between cloth and velour is quick and fuss-free.

Battery is a non-issue in a positive way because the wired design avoids charging for long sessions or travel.

Because the PC38X is wired, there is no battery runtime to manage or recharge. One reviewer explicitly treats that effectively unlimited uptime as a benefit.

There is no active noise cancellation, and reviewers treated that absence as a real limitation at the price despite decent passive isolation.

Spatial audio was positively received through Dolby Atmos or related support, though the evidence frames it as an enhancement rather than mandatory.

Android compatibility worked well in the test evidence, with Android included among platforms that had no issues.

The included DAC and hi-res playback were a major value-add for many reviewers, improving clarity and enabling higher-quality or Dolby-supported listening, though one reviewer found it less useful.

Cable-borne rubbing noise is inconsistent but real: two reviewers notice some microphonics from the braided cable, while another says the deep-set connector largely suppresses vibration noise.

The included cloth pouch keeps the headset from getting scratched or dusty, but reviewers say it provides little real impact protection.

Console use had a notable DAC limitation in one review, where PlayStation use produced a volume decrease instead of a benefit.

The dongle was polarizing: some liked its compact USB-C design, while others found it distracting, unhelpful on console, large, or faulty.

Game/chat balance control was a missing-function concern in one review, where the reviewer wanted more swappable-side controls.

Glasses wearers report excellent results once the clamp settles, with soft pads applying little unwanted temple pressure. The open, cushioned fit is repeatedly singled out as glasses-friendly.

Overall sentiment is strongly positive, with many reviewers calling the PC38X a favorite, a top-tier gaming headset or an easy recommendation. The dissenting reviews mainly object to price, build feel, clamp or specific FPS tuning rather than the whole product.

The Dolby performance preset was praised for making important competitive sounds easier to hear.

Replaceable ear plates were praised as easy, satisfying, magnetic, and highly customizable.

The matte plastic finish resists visible fingerprints well in the one review that evaluates smudging, helping the headset stay clean-looking.

USB-C was appreciated for modern device support and charging/power flexibility.

The Dolby Access app was viewed as a useful, optional enhancement rather than a necessity in one review.

Bluetooth was a clear omission; reviewers called out the absence of wireless/Bluetooth as a drawback for users who want untethered listening.

Charging support through the DAC was useful, especially for phones and handhelds, though one reviewer wanted higher passthrough wattage.

Fit and seal felt secure in one review, with the magnetic cable/module connection described as locked in.

Durability around the headband/hinge area was praised in first impressions, especially the metal headband construction.
