Compare Holmes HAP706-NU vs Honeywell HFD-120-Q

Most owners say the purifier makes rooms feel fresher and noticeably cleaner, with several calling out quick improvements in stale or dusty spaces. A smaller group felt the weak fan limited how much air it could actually clean.

Most reviewers say the purifier improves room air noticeably, often within hours or days. A smaller group says it feels more like a fan or fails to capture enough fine dust.

Replacement-filter cost is a recurring caveat. Some shoppers find the filters reasonable or offset by generics, while others say they approach the price of the purifier.

Avoiding replacement-filter costs is one of the biggest buyer wins. Many reviewers contrast washable filters with expensive disposable replacements, though a few still mention optional or hard-to-find extras.

Noise depends heavily on speed and unit quality. Low and medium often work as soft white noise, while high speed, rattles, squeals, and failing motors are repeated complaints.

Noise feedback is mostly positive, with many calling it quiet, barely noticeable, or pleasant white noise. Light sleepers and some defective units report louder rattles, clicking, or high-speed noise.

The carbon filter disappointed one reviewer, who expected a denser odor layer and described it as more like a thin scrubbing pad.

Charcoal prefilters get a modest nod for catching lint, fibers, and odors, but the comments do not make them the main reason to buy the purifier.

True HEPA filtration is a selling point for many buyers, who see it as a step above HEPA-type filters. Replacement needs and airflow tradeoffs still come up.

True HEPA expectations are a poor fit for this purifier. Reviewers who wanted HEPA-level fine-particle capture tended to be disappointed, while others knowingly chose it despite that limitation.

Filter life varies a lot by use. Some owners stretch filters for a year, while allergy, pet, smoke, and dust-heavy homes report more frequent changes.

Long filter life is a real plus where mentioned, with owners highlighting permanent or durable filters that keep working for years.

Filter availability is inconsistent. A few owners liked the options or included filters, but one could not find the true HEPA replacement they wanted.

Filter availability is uneven: older or OEM replacements can be hard to find, even though the washable design reduces how often buyers need replacements.

The washable pre-filter is a practical plus for several buyers because it cuts down on maintenance waste and may help the main filter last longer.

Washable filters are a standout advantage, repeatedly described as convenient, economical, reusable, and a reason to choose this model.

Reliability is the biggest risk in the reviews. Positive long-term stories exist, but failures of fans, motors, speeds, rattling, and total shutdowns appear repeatedly.

Reliability is polarized: many units run for years or even over a decade, while some fail, rattle, or lose button function earlier than expected.

Customer support gets limited but favorable feedback, with Holmes replacing failed units and one owner praising prompt service.

Customer support is mixed: one warranty path felt frustrating and costly, while another owner praised a no-cost replacement after accidental damage.

Condition on arrival is mixed, with a few reports of defective or possibly mishandled units right out of the box.

Arrival condition is mostly fine, though one buyer noted rough-looking shipping packaging even though the purifier itself still worked.

Replacement experiences range from helpful to frustrating. Some owners received replacements, while others could not get one or found returns too expensive.

Replacement experiences vary from a warranty replacement that eventually arrived to replacement filters that needed trimming or were confusing to size.

Value is strong when the unit works: buyers like the low price, small-room performance, and white-noise benefits. The value falls apart for owners facing early failure or costly filters.

Value is usually strong because the purifier works well and avoids disposable filters. Complaints focus on price jumps, cheaper alternatives, or units that feel like costly fans.

Ease of use is a quiet strength. Reviewers liked the simple setup, basic controls, and easy operation without needing smart features.

Owners often find setup and basic operation simple, with several saying it is ready to plug in and easy to manage.

Ionizer and ozone comfort is a concern for some owners. Several avoid the ionizer around asthma, pets, or babies because of ozone worries.

Ozone concerns are addressed by one reviewer who says the purifier meets a low ozone-emission standard, though other buyers remain wary of ionizing air cleaners.

Airflow is one of the clearest tradeoffs. Some people liked the smoother breeze, but several complained that even the high setting moved very little air.

Air movement is one of the strongest themes: owners repeatedly say the tower moves a lot of air, circulates rooms quickly, and can feel fan-like. A few critics wanted stronger intake pull.

Pollen sufferers were among the happiest buyers, with reports of fewer symptoms and cleaner-feeling air during pollen-heavy seasons.

Pollen feedback is limited and mixed, with some confidence it helps and one reviewer saying high tree-pollen days still caused major symptoms.

Safety concerns are serious despite being less common than positive reviews. Multiple owners mention smoke, sparks, burning smells, or fear of fire.

Safety concerns are mixed, from ozone and electronics interference to sinus irritation when pointed at a sleeper. One ozone-focused reviewer felt the certification level was safe enough.

The three-speed control is simple and useful when it works, but several owners report awkward gaps between speeds or lower settings failing.

Owners like having three fan speeds and often settle on low or medium for daily use. High is useful for airflow but can be too loud or strong for sleep-sensitive users.

Particle capture gets favorable notes from owners who saw fuzz or fine particles collecting in the filter. The strongest praise came from wildfire and visible-filter-use situations.

Particle removal is mixed: some owners see haze or visible particles improve, while critics say fine dust passes through and true HEPA systems do better.

The HEPA filter itself is generally trusted, though one owner disliked how the filter seated in the unit and worried about bypass leaks.

HEPA feedback is mixed to negative because this model is repeatedly described as not being a HEPA unit. Some buyers accept that tradeoff for quieter operation and washable filters.

Smell on startup or failure is a concern in a minority of reviews. Reports range from a mild new-unit smell to burning-plastic or electrical odors.

Initial odor is the most repeated concern. Many say plastic, chemical, metallic, or new-appliance smells fade quickly, but a few found the smell strong enough to return or give away the unit.

Odor control is mixed. Some buyers say it freshens rooms, bathrooms, smoke, pet spaces, and diapers, while others say cooking odors or powdery filter smells linger.

Odor reduction is a major strength across pet smells, cooking odors, stale air, musty rooms, smoke, and cat urine. Chemical or plastic odor from the unit itself is the main exception.

Portability is a small positive. Owners liked that the unit is light enough to move between rooms, though another Holmes model was preferred for having a handle.

Portability is praised by owners who move it room to room, helped by low weight, a handle, and an easy-to-carry tower shape.

Room coverage is best received in bedrooms, offices, bathrooms, and other small spaces. Larger rooms can still improve, but buyers repeatedly warn it is not a whole-house machine.

Room coverage is generally praised for bedrooms, living rooms, apartments, and even multi-room layouts when expectations are reasonable. Some reviewers still prefer multiple units for larger homes.

Smoke reduction is praised when the purifier is used in apartments or rooms exposed to nearby smokers. Owners who mentioned smoke often noticed the smell or haze drop after running it.

Smoke performance is generally praised for wildfire, woodstove, and cigarette smoke, but not everyone finds it complete for active smoking or smaller smoke particles.

Pet dander feedback is positive overall, especially in cat households where allergy symptoms eased. A few reviews describe meaningful relief even when pets remained in the home.

Pet dander removal is a strong use case for many homes with cats, dogs, rabbits, and other animals, though one reviewer believed a dog’s symptoms worsened.

Dust removal is a major strength in many bedrooms, offices, and small rooms. Reviewers often noticed less surface dust or visible debris gathering in the filter.

Dust reduction is one of the clearest strengths, with many owners dusting less often and seeing dust collected in filters. A few reviewers still found furniture dust or fine dust escaping.

Maintenance is generally straightforward: owners mention rinsing, vacuuming, or cleaning the foam filter without much fuss.

Maintenance is usually considered easy, with many owners rinsing, vacuuming, or washing filters quickly. Some find the inner filters or foam prefilter tedious, especially with smoke or heavy dust.

Allergy relief is the strongest recurring theme. Many reviewers describe less sneezing, clearer breathing, fewer flare-ups, or easier nights after using it.

Allergy relief is one of the most consistent positives, especially for dust, pets, pollen, and general indoor congestion. A few reviews say relief was incomplete during heavy pollen or severe allergy periods.

Overall satisfaction leans positive because many owners felt real relief and bought more units. Serious reliability and safety complaints keep the consensus from being uniformly enthusiastic.

Overall sentiment is strongly positive, with many owners recommending it, buying more units, or replacing old ones with the same model. Negative reviews usually center on odor, fine dust, or failures.

Breathing relief is repeatedly praised, especially for asthma, sinus issues, wildfire smoke, and allergy-related stuffiness. Several buyers describe feeling a difference quickly.

Breathing relief is a major strength, with many owners reporting clearer noses, less coughing, fewer sinus issues, and easier breathing overnight.

Appearance receives light but mixed feedback. One owner called it attractive, while another said the design looked cheap; a broken unit still got a nod for style.

Design feedback is favorable: owners call it sleek, attractive, compact, and easy to blend into a room.

Durability is sharply split between long-running older units and newer failures. Some lasted years of constant use, while many recent units died within months or under a year.

Durability is often excellent, with several units lasting many years under constant use. A minority describe early failure, rattling, or control issues.

Build quality is uneven. Some units feel reasonably made or high quality, while complaints mention cheap plastic, poor fit, and quality dropping versus older Holmes models.

Build quality ranges from sturdy and well made to cheap-feeling on units with failed oscillation or broken parts.

Sleep use is common and often positive. Many like the white noise and better breathing at night, although noisy or pitch-changing units can ruin bedroom use.

Many allergy and congestion sufferers say they slept better with the purifier running, helped by cleaner air and steady white noise.

The compact footprint suits desks, nightstands, bedrooms, offices, and counters. Some still found it a little bigger than expected or too limited for larger rooms.

The tower shape is usually liked for its slim footprint and easy placement, though the recommended wall clearance can make it awkward in small apartments.

One reviewer valued the stated ability to circulate room air nearly five times per hour, tying it to the appeal of washable filters and dust control.

Dryness only comes up lightly, with one allergy sufferer suggesting a humidifier in winter or dry rooms alongside the purifier.

Cord length gets one clear compliment for giving more placement options.

Setup and cleaning directions are generally described as clear and easy to follow, with one reviewer appreciating that instructions are placed conveniently on the unit.

Energy comments are favorable, with owners saying it helps avoid extra air-conditioning use or feels efficient to run continuously.

The ionizer draws mixed reactions. Some say it improves results or reduces static, while others dislike limited coverage or avoid it because of ozone concerns.

Mold-related comments are limited but positive, with one reviewer saying it helped with a possible mold-spore problem alongside pet dander.

Oscillation is liked when it works, especially for spreading airflow, but failures and clicking motors are among the most common mechanical complaints.

Pet hair capture is generally helpful but not perfect; owners report less hair or pet debris, while one review says cat hair still floats around.

Power use is praised by owners who measured or noticed low wattage, making 24/7 operation feel reasonable.

Remote control feedback is limited to one owner wishing it had a remote, so this is more of a missing convenience than a core flaw.

Several owners like the cool airflow and use it like a fan, but others say it can make a room uncomfortably cold in cooler weather.

One owner cites California ozone certification and feels comfortable with the safety standard.

Settings retention gets a complaint because oscillation does not stay enabled after shutdown.

Touch and button feedback is mixed: soft-touch controls feel modern, but long-term owners report buttons becoming harder to press or failing entirely.

Virus reduction confidence is speculative and limited to one buyer who believes the filter may capture more than stated, including viruses.

VOC-style odor feedback appears in paint-fume comments, where one owner said lingering paint smell disappeared after turning the purifier on.

Filter replacement or cleaning indicators disappoint several owners because the cleaning light fails to warn them when filters are visibly dirty.

The prefilter earns mixed marks: some owners like how much it catches or that replacement prefilters help, while others blame it for odor or say it is the only part doing real work.

The carrying handle is appreciated when intact, but one review reports the rear lifting piece breaking immediately.

Warranty coverage sounds reassuring on paper, but one reviewer found the return shipping burden and replacement process frustrating.
