Compare Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera vs Nest Doorbell Wired, 2nd Gen

Color choice was limited, with one reviewer noting the single finish could not be matched to home decor.

Color choice received praise because the doorbell offered unusually many finish options for the category.

Power compatibility was a clear limitation because the doorbell is hardwired-only and loses function during power outages.

Wired power was valued for 24/7 recording and steadier operation, but wiring requirements made the battery model more appealing for some homes.

Package monitoring was the most divided attribute, ranging from most reliable ever to no package alerts, misplaced notices, and needing more work.

Package monitoring was praised for notifying on deliveries, pickups, and package-related activity accurately.

Recording was mixed-to-weak: subscription clips can be useful, but reviewers disliked no free video recording, no local storage, and fixed clip behavior.

Face recognition scored poorly because reviewers noted it was missing as a premium feature.

Face recognition was helpful in principle but inconsistent or unavailable for some reviewers because of subscription or location limits.

Responsiveness was mixed: one review reported almost zero lag, while others saw several-second delays in Alexa, audio, or live-view loading.

Live-view latency and response speed were usually strong, but notification cooldowns and occasional app reconnection delays remained caveats.

Accessory inclusion earned positive mention because the wedge plate was appreciated for setup flexibility.

The included wedge was praised for materially improving the viewing angle and making the front-door view sufficient.

Radar-assisted motion detection was often praised for reducing false alerts, but a few reviewers still reported mistaken person or package notifications.

Motion detection was praised for consistently identifying activity and separating relevant motion from general movement.

Buyer recommendations were ecosystem-dependent: most reviewers recommended it for Ecobee, Alexa, or HomeKit users, while one strongly rejected it because of subscriptions.

Recommendations were positive overall, especially for new buyers, Google Home users, and first-time smart security buyers.

Zones and activity areas were praised as simple, customizable, and helpful for narrowing monitored space.

Activity zones received very strong praise for customization and for reducing irrelevant alerts while still recording useful events.

Storage was a weakness because reviewers criticized the lack of internal or local storage and the reliance on paid cloud recording.

Storage was the most consistent limitation: free cloud history helps, but three hours and no local expandable storage frustrated reviewers.

Chime support was a strength, from restoring analog chimes to using Ecobee thermostats as additional chimes.

Existing chime compatibility and seasonal doorbell tones were useful, but one review noted that a chime is not included.

Person detection was consistently described as accurate or highly selective, while object/package detection was more uneven.

Object and person detection earned strong praise for distinguishing people, packages, animals, vehicles, and other motion categories.

Thermostat and hub integration was the standout strength, with reviewers repeatedly praising live video, chime, intercom, and security hub uses.

Nest Hub integration was strongly praised as a simpler way to view the doorbell feed inside the home.

Privacy evidence was mixed: reviewers liked two-factor authentication and on-device processing, but wanted HomeKit Secure Video or found Ecobee’s privacy wording generic.

Privacy controls and face recognition drew mixed evidence: disabling the camera was useful, while facial profiles were described as contentious.

Security ecosystem integration was strong when paired with Ecobee thermostats, sensors, cameras, and professional monitoring.

Reviewers who were already in the Google/Nest ecosystem found the doorbell especially well integrated and satisfying.

System completeness was strong inside Ecobee’s ecosystem, but reviewers noted missing pieces such as outdoor cameras and wireless hardware.

One review framed the product as a feature-stacked, user-friendly home security upgrade.

The subscription was the product’s biggest tradeoff: it unlocks useful recording, package, and monitoring features, but several reviewers disliked the paywall.

Subscription sentiment was mixed: free features are unusually useful, but longer history, 24/7 review, and some AI features require payment.

Most reviewers found the 1080p HDR image clear, colorful, and sharp enough for visitors, though one reviewer felt 1080p was not especially clear versus higher-resolution options.

Reviewers generally found the HDR video sharp and better than the modest paper resolution suggests, though some still noted the lower 960p spec.

The reviews that addressed distortion said the tall view avoided fisheye or obvious distortion.

One reviewer valued that the view avoids the fisheye look common to wider-angle cameras.

Notifications were praised as clever and not excessive in some tests, but other reviewers reported misplaced package notices or false person alerts.

Notification speed was often praised, but some reviewers complained about cooldown behavior that delayed repeated alerts.

Smart-home integration was a major draw for Alexa, HomeKit, and Ecobee households, but reviewers repeatedly flagged gaps such as no HomeKit Secure Video and inconsistent Google support.

Smart-home integration was strongest for Google Home and Nest devices, with Alexa support viewed as useful but more limited.

The Ecobee app was usually described as easy, clean, or intuitive, but live-view errors, Home app distortion, and slow loads hurt the software score.

The Google Home app was mostly praised for ease and clean design, though one reviewer disliked replacing the older Nest app experience.

Physical controls and indicators were praised because the doorbell button is obvious and easy for visitors to understand.

Controls and indicators were reviewed positively, including the satisfying button and speaker-chime customization.

Size and form factor were mostly acceptable, including a cramped install success, but the wired-only form factor made the product less accessible.

The physical size was viewed positively, with reviewers liking the lower profile and more compact wired form factor.

Automation flexibility had limited but positive evidence, mainly around HomeKit/Ecobee automation and alert setup.

The box contents and install kit were praised for including helpful extras such as wire extenders and needed accessories.

Bandwidth evidence was mixed: continuous recording can use significant data, but compression and event-based use helped limit data consumption.

Pre-roll was highly valued because reviewers said it helped prevent missed motion or doorbell events.

Quick replies were useful for some hands-off interactions, though at least one reviewer found premade responses personally unappealing.

Quiet-time controls were viewed as useful for preventing the indoor chime from ringing when silence is needed.

The siren was treated as a useful deterrent, with one reviewer describing it as loud.

Video sharing was mixed: one reviewer praised fast phone downloads and share options, while another found downloads very slow.

Build and weather readiness were viewed positively thanks to sturdy construction, IP65 protection, and a broad operating temperature range.
