Compare Samsung HW-Q990F Soundbar vs Sonos Era 300 Speaker

The wireless rear/sub pairing process is repeatedly described as seamless, instant, or nearly effortless.

Initial grouping is easy for most owners, but switching a stereo pair between room and surround roles can require tedious reconfiguration.

Alexa-style assistant integration is present and useful, but one reviewer found the always-listening behavior annoying enough to mute.

Alexa remains useful for smart-home functions; Sonos Voice Control focuses on music playback.

The SmartThings app is generally praised as helpful and easier than the display/remote, with only minor complaints about using it for deeper adjustments.

The Sonos app is often praised for easy setup and broad service access, though several reviewers found its search, Atmos browsing, or responsiveness frustrating.

Smart features are generally useful and well integrated, especially app control and streaming options.

The speaker combines multiroom, Bluetooth, voice control, and Atmos, but its app and service limitations reduce convenience for some buyers.

Voice assistant responsiveness appears high enough to trigger annoyance in one review, but the evidence is limited.

Voice control is often quick and useful, though one review reports false activations and another notes limited feature depth.

Wireless streaming is mixed: several reviewers praise wireless connectivity, while others flag dropouts or fussy phone handoff behavior.

Wireless streaming is broadly reliable, although one pair occasionally lost signal before reconnecting.

EQ and channel customization are broadly useful, though some reviewers note limits and prefer the app for detailed adjustments.

Room tuning and EQ help tailor the sound; Trueplay works well, though paired-speaker tuning has drawn setup criticism.

Low-volume performance is unusually strong, with reviewers praising quiet-detail audibility and private/low-level listening usefulness.

At very low volume the tonal balance can weaken; the speaker sounds fuller once turned up.

The smaller dual-driver subwoofer is widely praised for deep, controlled, room-filling bass, but a few reviewers note placement sensitivity, looser timing, or strain at high output.

Reviewers describe subwoofer as a practical part of the listening experience, with both benefits and limitations depending on use.

Wired connectivity is repeatedly described as excellent or sufficient, especially for HDMI/eARC and optical use.

USB-C line-in enables turntables and other wired sources, but the necessary adapter is an extra purchase.

Audio format support is broad and positively framed, covering mainstream immersive formats and newer support without major reviewer concern.

Atmos can open up a strikingly immersive presentation, but the experience depends on the mix and the supported streaming route; some mixes disappoint.

Stereo and music imaging are generally praised for focus, width, and staging, but one dissenting review found music performance especially weak.

Stereo pairs create a wide, stable image; a single unit can also separate channels, though the result is less consistent across positions.

Height staging receives standout praise, including claims it is better produced than on other soundbar systems.

The upward-firing driver can add convincing height, particularly with well-mixed Atmos tracks and an open placement.

Surround presentation is the product’s strongest consensus area, with reviewers praising immersion, positioning, and a convincing sound bubble; one review found rear speakers weaker under stress.

Spatial playback can sound enveloping and three-dimensional, but mix quality and room placement strongly affect the result.

The system’s bass and spatial presentation are described as non-directional or room-filling enough to feel omnidirectional.

Sound spreads broadly beyond the cabinet, giving a single speaker a room-filling quality.

Google Cast/Chromecast-style streaming is included in a wireless feature set reviewers describe positively.

The lack of Chromecast and Google Cast leaves Android users with fewer direct streaming options.

Dialogue clarity is usually considered strong, helped by Samsung’s voice features, but one review sharply criticized speech as muffled and underwhelming.

TV dialogue is clear, though stereo playback may not anchor voices precisely to the center of the screen.

The system’s size and weight are a tradeoff: reviewers accept the heft for performance but warn it may not fit easily under some TVs.

At nearly ten pounds, the speaker is awkward to move even though it is designed to stay in place.

Most reviewers report clean performance at high levels, though one notes cabinet strain/rattle from the redesigned subwoofer when pushed very hard.

The speaker stays clean at substantial volume, but highly revealing playback can sound harsh on poorly made recordings.

Google integration is mixed: Google Cast support is praised as part of the wireless set, while one reviewer could not connect Google Home.

The missing Google Assistant is a repeated drawback for people invested in Google’s ecosystem.

Detail retrieval is a major strength, with reviewers praising fine effects, quiet details, and textural information in movies and music.

Fine detail comes through clearly, with some critics noting that revealing playback can expose weak recordings.

Physical control buttons are praised for being clicky rather than touch-sensitive.

The volume slider and touch controls are generally responsive and easy to use, though some listeners still prefer physical buttons.

Reviewers broadly praise the tonal balance, clarity, bass-to-midrange integration, and detailed highs, with only isolated complaints around music quality.

Reviewers describe frequency response balance as a practical part of the listening experience, with both benefits and limitations depending on use.

AirPlay is supported with positive reviewer comments around fast, reliable, or Atmos-compatible wireless playback.

AirPlay offers a simple way to stream from Apple devices.

Home theater integration is a core strength, especially with Samsung TVs/Q-Symphony, but the four-piece system can feel like clutter and Q-Symphony results vary.

Era 300 rears can add a convincing height layer and a much more enveloping field to compatible Sonos theater systems.

Reviewers consistently describe the system as loud and room-filling, with enough output for large rooms; no review frames maximum volume as a major weakness.

The speaker can fill medium and large rooms with strong output, although a few reviewers note limits in very large spaces.

Cohesion is excellent in the strongest reviews, with subwoofer, bar, and surrounds described as seamless and tonally matched.

Reviewers often describe the presentation as cohesive and seamless, especially when several channels are working together.

Setup is one of the strongest positives, repeatedly described as easy, plug-and-play, or novice-friendly, though one review wanted some manual intervention.

Most reviewers found setup quick and simple; a few had to retry Wi-Fi or tuning steps.

Value is split by price sensitivity: many reviewers say performance justifies the cost, while others say the expensive system is not clearly excellent enough.

Many reviewers consider the sound and ecosystem worth the premium, while others say the price and adapter costs will deter buyers.

Design is polarizing: many like the cleaner subwoofer and modern industrial look, while others find the soundbar dated, bulky, or not home-friendly.

The hourglass shape is distinctive and functional, but it divides opinion and needs room around it.

TV/lip-sync latency is rated strongly, with reviewers reporting no delay, no lag, or low-latency playback across wired and wireless setups.

The Era 300 produces controlled, surprisingly deep bass for its size. Some listeners want more sub-bass weight, while stereo pairs or a Sub add extra authority.

The Era 300 is widely praised for clear, powerful, room-filling sound, with a few tradeoffs in bass extension and recording sensitivity.

Compatibility beyond Samsung is positive in limited evidence, with one reviewer saying it works fine with non-Samsung TV products.

Cabinet construction is mostly fine, but one reviewer reports audible creak/rattle from the subwoofer cabinet under very high-volume strain.

Dolby Atmos height and 3D effects are widely praised as convincing, well placed, and among the best reviewers have heard from soundbars.

Reviewers describe dust resistance rating as a practical part of the listening experience, with both benefits and limitations depending on use.

Dynamic headroom is praised for punch, scale, and powerful transient impact.

Gaming HDMI passthrough receives positive evidence from PS5 testing, where reviewers reported no lag or video-quality drop.

HDMI 2.1 gaming support is praised for 4K/120-style passthrough and no lag or video-quality loss in gaming tests.

HDMI eARC is praised for letting the TV remote handle everyday volume and mute control.

Inter-speaker wireless communication is praised for retaining connections without manual input.

Build and sound quality feel premium overall, although one reviewer found cosmetic fit issues below expectations at this price.

The unboxing is straightforward and uses recycled paper-based packaging.

The physical microphone mute is considered an important privacy/control feature.

Rear-speaker cable flexibility receives one positive note because Samsung includes different lead lengths for easier placement.

Remote usability is mixed: some reviewers like the simple, well-laid-out design, while others find deeper remote/display navigation tedious.

Room calibration is generally useful and effective, though several reviewers characterize the improvements as subtle or requiring small manual corrections.

Status indicators are a recurring weak spot because the dot-matrix/front display can be hard to read or tedious for adjustments.

Vocal clarity is mostly praised for clean, present voices, though some reviewers found voice processing unnatural or dialogue/vocals muffled.

Bluetooth/AirPlay/Tidal connection speed receives a positive reviewer note, but Bluetooth-specific stability evidence is limited.

Bluetooth adds a convenient way for guests and non-Sonos devices to play music, and pairing is often quick.

Stereo and Atmos both sound engaging, with clear vocals, dynamic shifts, and strong musical detail.

On-device controls are useful and accessible, though the strongest control praise tends to shift toward the app.

Reviewers describe voice recognition accuracy as a practical part of the listening experience, with both benefits and limitations depending on use.

Build quality is mostly positive, with sturdy metal and high-end feel, but one reviewer calls the overall construction merely adequate for the class.

The optical input receives a positive latency assessment in the available evidence.

Spotify Connect is included in a wireless streaming bundle reviewers call stellar, though reviews do not deeply isolate Spotify-specific behavior.

Video passthrough support is strong, with praise for 4K/120, HDR format passthrough, and gaming-friendly HDMI behavior.
